U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Wayne Grigsby Jr., Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa commanding general, gave a lecture to students, planted a tree and spoke in a press conference Aug. 21, 2014, at the Uganda Senior Command and Staff College in Kimaka, Uganda.

Grigsby met and spoke with more than 40 officers from several different countries including, but not limited to, Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda and Tanzania.

“I want you to be great teammates,” Grigsby said. “When you are a commander you want everyone to work together as one team.”

Grigsby gave a lecture on what it means to be a leader, a teammate and competent in their craft. These core values are the foundation of success, he said.

During the discussion portion of the lecture a student said he believes that contribution to others is a crucial part of being a teammate.

Grigsby and Uganda People’s Defense Force Lt. Gen. Andrew Gutti, former African Union Mission in Somalia commander and USCSC commandant, along with USCSC leadership planted a tree on the college campus to signify the partnership between the UPDF and CJTF-HOA.

“I see a bright future and it’s great to be part of this team,” Grigsby said.

Following the tree planting, the USCSC hosted a press conference with local media. The reporters asked Grigsby questions about the U.S. role in supporting UPDF’s mission in the fight against terror in Africa.

“The mission of CJTF-HOA is to enable and assist our teammates in East Africa,” Grigsby replied. “We will continue to do that to the best of our abilities.”

Grigsby’s visit at the college was one of several meetings with the UPDF during his trip focused on strengthening the Joint Interagency, Intergovernmental, and Multinational team.

“I am very satisfied and I think we are moving in the right direction,” Grigsby said.
