Somali doctors emboldened by Mogadishu medical training

The Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa J3 Military Coordination Cell, along with the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), hosted the year’s third Continuing Medical Education Conference Sept. 14, 2016, in Mogadishu, Somalia. The conference brought 20 medical students and general practitioners from various sectors of Mogadishu together to receive training on various medical practices, specifically in the fields of radiology and pediatrics.

U.S., Japanese forces talk tactics for evacuation operations

The table-top exercise focused on supporting Japanese military forces in the event of a necessary evacuation of Americans or Japanese citizens from a hostile location in Africa. During the multi-day exercise, both forces discussed route planning, logistics, equipment maintenance, how military personnel would be involved, medical support and use of air and ground transportation for evacuees. The plans also examined their strengths and weaknesses and reassessed the movement of evacuees to safety.

Somali Police Force Maritime Police Unit exercise

Five small boats with the Somali Police Force Maritime Police Unit conduct a maritime exercise demonstrating their capabilities off the coast of Mogadishu, Somalia. Representatives from approximately seven countries involved in improving security and stability in Somalia observed the demonstration Aug. 25, 2016. Trained by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the maritime police unit received two new vessels for training and interdiction operations around the coast of Somalia.

U.S. Navy Sailors from Task Force Sparta conduct training in how to counter improvised explosive devices for African Union Mission in Somalia troop contributing countries at the Joint Military Training Center, Aug. 25, 2016, in Mogadishu, Somalia. The AMISOM soldiers learned how to effectively detect and combat IEDs to continue their efforts toward regional security and stability in Somalia. Task Force Sparta members are a part of the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa, which works to strengthen Eastern African partners in countering and neutralizing violent extremists in Somalia and the region.
