U.S. Army Capt. Matthew Kirkpatrick (right), team chief, and Col. James Lucas (left), surgeon, both assigned to 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion (CA BN), place a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machine, which is used to test for pathogens like the COVID-19 virus, on display prior to a ceremony at the ministry’s Central Purchasing of Materials and Essential Medicine’s facility in Djibouti City, Djibouti, Aug. 17, 2020. Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) purchased the equipment on behalf of the United States using Overseas Humanitarian, Disaster Assistance, and Civic Aid (OHDACA) funds for approximately $76,000, following a request for aid from the Djiboutian government earlier this year. In total, CJTF-HOA has facilitated nearly $300,000 worth of U.S. aid to the government of Djibouti, including hygiene kits, 95 hospital beds, PPE and hand sanitizer among other supplies and equipment.
