U.S. Army Spc. Rodney Drew’s body slapped down hard on the padded floor, reverberating throughout the room. Sparring with U.S. Army Pfc. Kurt Sikes, both Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 153rd Infantry Regiment deployed with the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA), heisted and heaved one another, alternating control with each movement.

CJTF-HOA participates in 40th Djiboutian Independence Day’s military parade

Djibouti gained its independence from France on June 29, 1977, making this year a special 40th anniversary celebration. The annual Djiboutian Independence Day celebrations are used to highlight Djiboutian traditions such as singing and dancing and to promote peace, equality, and unity as the nation works its way into another year of Independence. The military parade is an important part of the celebrations, giving the Djiboutian National Army an opportunity to build relationships with its Multinational partners.

AFRICOM Imam leads first Iftar with U.S., SNA leaders

U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Miguel Castellanos, deputy commanding general for CJTF-HOA in Somalia and Mogadishu Coordination Cell director was the senior U.S. military hosted an Iftar at the Mogadishu International Airport for U.S. personnel from AFRICOM, Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA), the Mogadishu Coordination Cell, as well as Somali National Army leaders. This was the first time a U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) Imam led an Iftar.

CJTF-HOA succeeds in proof-of-concept mission for more efficient airlift with European partners

Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa Joint Logistics Operations Center achieved its initial Air Transportation and Refueling Exchange of Service (ATARES) with the Italian military here, June 9. This year, the U.S. forces in Africa join 23 other nations participating in ATARES membership, decreasing administrative procedure and increasing multinational cooperation. This is accomplished by using one C-130 Hercules flying hour as currency.

101st Airborne Division platoon provides secure training area for historic Somali National Army training

On May 24, 2017, nearly 60 Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers from a Danab battalion graduated from a U.S.-led logistics training course offered at Mogadishu, Somalia. This historic graduation, the first of three to be offered this year by U.S. Africa Command, was carried out by a small team of fewer than 20 total U.S. trainers and security personnel from the 101st Airborne Division out of Fort Campbell, Ky.

The periodic visits are part of an ongoing effort to interact with religious leaders of different faiths in the local communities.
