Camp Lemonnier, DJIBOUTI- Leadership for Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa changed hands during a transfer of authority ceremony, May 1.

U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. David Furness, commander of CJTF-HOA transferred responsibility to U.S. Army Brig. Gen. William Zana, deputy commander of CJTF-HOA. The transfer of authority was presided over by U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, commander of United States Africa Command.

During his final address to the service members of CJTF-HOA, Furness thanked them for their service and commitment while serving as their commander.

“I salute you all for what you do and the actions that you’ve taken since I’ve been here,” said Furness. “You’ve performed admirably, magnificently, and I appreciate it.”

Furness also thanked the many partners with which he worked with, from the State Department, to the coalition liaison officers, Camp Lemonnier personnel, as well as his own staff.

“For my staff and the members that make up the joint task force, we come from every service: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, active and reserve components,” said Furness. “Your diversity is your strength; you’ve never shied away from any mission, no matter how difficult it is. You’ve performed exceptionally well with everything you have ever been tasked with. Thank you for that; for the support and professionalism.”

Following the passing of the task force flag, Brig. Gen. Zana gave his first address as acting commanding general to the service members of CJTF-HOA. Zana began by thanking the many guests for attending the ceremony. He also thanked Furness for his guidance.

“To Maj. Gen. Furness, I’d really like to thank you for your leadership and your vision,” said Zana. “Your absolute steadfast commitment to this outstanding joint team is very much appreciated. It’s been a tremendous honor to serve with you.”

Zana also thanked Gen. Waldhauser for the opportunity to serve as both commander and deputy for CJTF-HOA.

“I am equal parts honored and humbled,” said Zana.” I appreciate your trust and confidence and your continued support for this great team.”

Zana also recognized African and international coalition partners.

"To our African, international and U.S. partners, I am extremely grateful for the strong bonds that we have formed together and I look forward to strengthening those in the coming months," said Zana.

Zana then spoke of his time serving as the deputy commander and his look toward the future.

“I’m proud to serve with you all of you,” Zana said. “I’ve been constantly amazed the past four months of your many talents, your dedication, and your ability to come together as an incredibly strong and capable team. “I thank you for what you have done, but more importantly for what you’re going to do. Thank you for your support, your commitment, and your counsel.”
