MSATA, Tanzania – U.S. Army soldiers with the East Africa Response Force (EARF), assigned to Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA), work with U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) soldiers, and Tanzania People’s Defense Force (TPDF) service members, to practice squad attack battle drill tactics and weapons fundamentals .

Throughout the day, side by side, the EARF, SETAF-AF, and TPDF performed a variety of weapons fundamentals, squad attack drills, and took part in a demonstration with reconnaissance drones from the U.S. Army Nebraska National Guard soldiers assigned to SETAF-AF who Tanzania announced in 2024 as having a State Partnership Program with.

During the weapons familiarization, the combined teams practiced safely loading, firing, function checking, and clearing a M240 machine gun. The training took the teams through rates of fire, fields of fire, and much more.

The combined teams also practiced squad attack drills. They focused on the importance of communication and response within their respective fire teams and how to move and communicate as one team.

By the conclusion of the day, the teams came together for a group photo. With the training simulating real-world situations, the combined teams ended their day not only with lessons learned, but as partners and teammates with a shared experience of camaraderie.

The EARF frequently deploys during exercise Justified Accord, validating tactics, techniques and procedures together with partners, demonstrating the U.S. commitment to African security.

CJTF-HOA plays a critical role in enhancing security cooperation and strengthening partnerships across East Africa. By working together in a hands-on, immersive environment, both forces enhanced their ability to communicate, collaborate, and execute these tactics and procedures in real-world scenarios.

Exercise JA25, the premier U.S. Africa Command (USAFRICOM) exercise in East Africa, is designed to enhance multinational combat readiness, strengthen crisis response capabilities, and foster collaboration among allied and partner forces. Led by U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) and hosted by Kenya, Djibouti, and Tanzania, JA25 integrates high-intensity training scenarios that sharpen warfighting skills, expand operational reach, and reinforce the ability to execute complex joint and multinational operations.

Through this training, CJTF-HOA continues to advance regional security cooperation and fortify its long-standing partnership with Tanzania, further strengthening the collective capability of allied and partner nations across East Africa.

Humans of HOA: From pulpit to battlefield
The air was heavy that day - not just from the summer heat, but from the weight of loss that clung to everyone in the room. Families sat close together, shoulders brushing, as if physical proximity could offer some small measure of comfort. Outside the chapel, the faint hum of military vehicles was a distant reminder of the larger conflict at hand. Inside, however, time felt suspended. It was just us, the grieving, and the silence.
