15th Marine Expeditionary Unit attends sustainment training at Arta Beach

Marines from 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit arrived ashore at Arta Beach, Djibouti, July 20, 2015, for two weeks of sustainment training to maintain and enhance the skills they developed during their pre-deployment training period. The 15th MEU is currently deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation.

Members of the 1/77th Armor Regiment, assigned to Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa, conduct range training in Arta, Djibouti, July 8, 2015. The service members, who recently arrived at Camp Lemonnier, were required to qualify on two small-arms weapon systems: the M4 rifle and the M9 pistol. U.S. Army soldiers regularly practice the fundamentals of shooting, as it is an important skill to the success of any mission they are conducting.

Djibouti celebrates 38 years of independence

Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa service members and Djibouti citizens celebrated Djibouti’s Independence Day June 27, 2015, signifying 38 years since the country declared it’s independence from France. Djibouti’s military, law enforcement and civil servants marched along the parade route, while the band played festive songs.

Command Senior Enlisted Leader leads through caring and compassion

In May, Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa service members bid adieu to the command senior enlisted leader, who had served them for two years. Since the new CSEL wasn’t going to arrive until the end of June, U.S. Army Sgt. Maj. Claudell Taylor was selected to fill that role temporarily.

Seabees Drive Equipment Training in Djibouti

Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti – U.S. Navy Seabees of Combined Task Unit (CTU) 68.2.1, comprised of members from Naval Mobile Construction Battalions (NMCB) 14 and 11, Detachment Horn of Africa, participated in a U.S. Army-led Counterterrorism Logistics and Engineering training evolution with the Forces Armee Djiboutienne (FAD) Construction Engineer Unit from February to May 2015.
The evolution was designed to build partnerships between coalition forces and the FAD, while increasing the FAD’s ability to support counterterrorism operations, defend local borders, and conduct resupply missions to Somalia.

U.S. Army Sgt. Robert Hames, Sgt. Rawan Abudahrieh and Sgt. 1st Class Geoffrey Bright receive the French National Defense Medal (Silver Level) June 11, 2015, for providing life-saving medical care to a French service member during a catastrophic motor vehicle accident in Feb. 27, 2015. The French National Defense Medal is awarded on three levels—bronze, silver and gold. Silver and gold-level medals are usually reserved to French individuals who have served in the French military for several years, and it is rare for U.S. service members to receive this award.
