Eric Vollmecke, the Deputy Director for Strategic Initiatives, Joint Staff, receive a tour from Maj. Gen. Kurt Sonntag, Commanding General of Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa, of an operation point for the U.S. Military on Dec. 1, 2016, in Mogadishu, Somalia. The tour gave the Generals insight of current operations and vision of future endeavors.

CJTF-HOA and Camp Lemonnier members participate in the Joint Warrior Competition

The Joint Warrior Competition started with a joint physical fitness test including pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups, two-mile run, and five-mile ruck march. Members had to carry a minimum of 35 pounds during the march. After the joint physical fitness test, participants started the joint combat fitness test. The combat test was comprised of a low crawl, tourniquet application, buddy carry, radio medical evacuation, grenade toss, tire flip, ammo can carry, dead lift, and rope climb. Competitors also completed a Navy swim test and 400 word essay to round off the event.

Tropical Medicine Course Comes to Camp Lemonnier

U.S. personnel and medical providers from partner nations attend a course dedicated to military tropical medicine at Camp Lemonnier, 15 Nov. 2016. The Joint U.S. Military Tropical Medicine course is designed to train and instruct medical personnel in the practice of medicine for developing areas around the globe. The course covers topics such as malaria, HIV, yellow fever and other diseases.

Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa members participate in French mud run

Service members from Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa Civil Affairs competed in an obstacle-filled mud run hosted by the French military, Nov. 6, 2016, in Djibouti, Djibouti. The event allowed coalition forces from French, Japanese, and American teams to interact and build camaraderie while navigating a five kilometer course. The French 5th Marine Regiment team took first place.

1/124th soldiers engage in team exercises

U.S. Army soldiers of Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 124th Infantry Regiment participate in a fire team exercise in Arta, Djibouti, Oct. 20, 2016. Delta Company regularly practices fire team exercises, utilizing maneuvers that were used in Iraq and Afghanistan. The intent of the exercise was to teach soldiers how to move from inside a vehicle when in contact with the enemy, exit the vehicle, and then return fire effectively using live ammunition on simulated targets. FAD troops learn to see in the dark

Nearly 40 soldiers from the Djiboutian Army will be able to see in the dark after completing night vision goggle training Oct. 9-12, 2016, in Djibouti City, Djibouti. The training, conducted by members of the U.S. Army’s Charlie Company, 411th Civil Affairs Battalion, which is currently mobilized to Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa, comes as the Djiboutian troops prepare for a two-year deployment to Somalia, as part of the African Union Mission in Somalia’s effort to remove al-Shabaab from the region.
