U.S. service members train in hottest country in the world for French Desert Commando Course

U.S. service members hone battle tactics and maneuvering during an overnight field training exercise at the Djiboutian Range Complex, Djibouti, Aug. 28-29, 2021. The exercise prepares service members for the French Desert Commando Course (FDCC) scheduled for mid-September. The course consists of knot tying, mountain confidence, basic infantry skills and night operations. The French Army invites a select number of U.S. service members to participate in the course where participants compete to earn the FDCC qualification badge upon successful completion of the course.

Task Force Iron Gray conducts joint combined arms live-fire with French forces

U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to various companies from Task Force Iron Gray, in support of Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA), and French Soldiers assigned to the 5th Overseas Interarms Regiment (5e RIAOM) participated in a joint combined arms live-fire training exercise at the Djiboutian RangeComplex, Djibouti, Aug. 11, 2021. U.S. Army Civil Affairs works to empower women in Djibouti

U.S. Army Soldiers with the Civil Affairs East Africa (CA-EA) functional specialty team as well as Soldiers assigned to the 404th CA-EA battalion, in support of Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA), taught both first aid and English to the staff and volunteers at Solidarte Feminine, a local organization in Djibouti that provides resources to women in need as well as those directly or indirectly affected by HIV. U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Lapthe C. Flora, the outgoing Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) commanding general, transferred responsibility to U.S. Army Maj. Gen. William L. Zana during a change of command ceremony. U.S. Army Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, commander of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), presided over the ceremony.

Members of Civil Affairs East Africa Southern European Task Force Africa, in support of Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) celebrate the inauguration of a library funded by the U.S. government April 27, 2021, in Damerjog, Djibouti. The library was handed over to the Djiboutian Ministry of Education and will benefit nearly 900 Damerjog students.

Imam Hassan Ahmed Migane, Imam of the Gachamaleh Mosque, visits Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti, April 28, 2021 to commemorate Iftar, the end of Ramadan meal that breaks the Ramadan fast, and pray with U.S. servicemembers. Infantry's First Females

U.S. Army 1st Lt. Jennifer Niemann and Private First Class Ashley Ensminger, both assigned to the East Africa Response Force (EARF) for Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa, talk about their deployment to Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti and their experience as the first females in Easy Company, 2-506 Infantry Battalion, 101st Infantry Division (Airborne), out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The EARF is a rapid deployment force with the ability to protect U.S. citizens and diplomatic facilities, non-combatant evacuation operations, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief operations, and other missions as directed. Both Niemann and Ensminger responded to the attack on Manda Bay, Kenya, on Jan. 5, 2020.
